2015. Another Year In Review

Last year I set a goal to clean up my pictures and repost them to Flickr in a more organized fashion.

Well, that didn’t happen.

I also started a 365 Questions Challenge. I was supposed to answer a different question each day of the year.

I think I made it to the end of the year.

I resolved to be more focused on family, friends, health, and happiness.

Waivered a little in this area as well.

2014 was a pretty unfocused for me. I had a few blows to my confidence at work this year that sort of left me off balance.

I applied for a supervisor position only to be told that I was not qualified (no degree). A similar position at another location was announced and the posting mentioned nothing about a degree so I applied for it. It closed on June 29th.

The position is still open and no interviews have been conducted, not just with me, I mean no one has been interviewed. 6 months without a word. My mind has been reeling with all kinds of speculation and my moods have been swinging all over the place and this has not really allowed me to be focused at all.

But here is what went well in 2015….

I managed to write 84 blog posts and read 47 books.

Evelyn and I just celebrated our 33rd wedding anniversary. I’m still amazed she puts up with me.

We spent a week in Puerto Rico. It was our first time and I’m determined to make sure it is not our last. What an amazing place. A truly beautiful place with amazing food and wonderful people. I wanted to look for a place to live.

We had a new furnace and air conditioner install at the house.

We bought a new car.

No one  spent a night in the hospital.

No one lost their job.

All was well in 2014.

QOTD–Man I Suck At This

Ok, that’s a statement, a fact. I haven’t answered a question since Feb. 11th so I guess it’s time for another marathon session.

Since I do good to remember what I did this morning, there’s no way I’m going to be able to answer these questions as if it was the day they were asked. Therefore (ooo, big word), I am answering them based on today, March 6th.

Here we go.

How many photos did you take today?

Zero, zilch, nada, none.

What book are you reading right now?

The Art Of Neighboring by Jay Pathak. I read 2 pages of the introduction 3 days ago so I guess that counts as currently reading.

How many hours of sleep did you get last night?

A rare 7 hours. Normally its around 5 1/2 to 6.

Last thing you wanted but didn’t get.

ROOT BEER! I was drinking 1 or 2 root beers a day for a while. I just couldn’t get enough, then I gave up soft drinks for Lent. Man, do I miss root beer.

What mood are you in today?

Kind of melancholy. I’ve been having some inner struggles staying upbeat due to having a chance to advance my career but being knocked down because I don’t have a college degree. It’s tough to keep up on a “happy” face when you know you are qualified for something but can’t get for only one reason.

What was the last new thing you tried?

Pollo Con Cremaat 3 Margaritas in Greenwood Village, CO. One of my favorite dishes!!!!  Rosanna Waldo loved & spotted this about 4 years ago.

If you’re talking food then it’s the Pollo Con Crema at 3 Margaritas. I would highly recommend it anytime.

Non-food? I have dabbled a little with meditation but not enough to stay focused without my mind wandering (or falling asleep). Guess I need more practice.

My biggest hope is______.

That Evelyn and I will be able to catch up on our financial obligations aka the bills by the end of year. Then we can plan the cruise that I have been promising her for the last 20 years.

What has challenged your morals?

I have a really strong moral compass so not much has tempted me. I live in Colorado where marijuana is legal but have no desire to partake. Lying and stealing would make me so uncomfortable that I would give myself away. That’s what good upbringing and a conscious does for you.

What kind of car are you driving?

A 2002 Jeep Liberty on most days. A 2000 Dodge Neon on the others.

List your pets.

I have no pets.

What are three things you need to buy?

Toilet paper, a winning lottery ticket, and maybe a new shirt.

Today I felt really secure knowing ______.

That my friends, family, and co-workers support me even when I’m being extra hard on myself.

Whose life did you make a difference in today?

Hopefully my co-worker. she applied for the same position that I applied for but I don’t have the degree and she does. I was asked by her potential future boss how I felt she would do in the position and I told the truth, I think she would do very well and had been encouraging her to apply all along.

What is your superpower?

Lately, it’s been professionalism and poise in the face of disappointment.

What is annoying you?

Me. Or mainly my self-doubt and frustration over this whole no degree thing. I know I made the right decision 32yrs ago when I dropped out of college. I had a new wife and a baby on the way, I needed to go to work full time for them. I just need to let myself be ok with all this and quit obsessing over it.

Obsessing, that’s mine and Evelyn’s word of the week.

What would have made today perfect?

I’m writing this while sitting in Mimi’s Café and drinking a wonderful cup (ok, bowl) of cappuccino, and writing. It doesn’t get much better than this. Well, maybe if I was doing this with Evelyn in Santa Fe, it would be perfect.

What stresses you?

Me. Most of my stress is self-induced and it’s usually over stupid shit.

The funniest thing you heard today.

During a department meeting this morning one co-worker was explaining the Fire Alarm Emergency Kit that she had assembled for us. It has a checklist, bullhorn, reflective vest, flashlight, and orange traffic cones in it. During her presentation another co-worker interrupted her to ask if we were supposed to put the cones on our heads and shout “Follow Me!”.

If you could have a new talent what would you want?

The same confidence in myself that others have in me. I’d also like to learn how to crochet.

Who is your best friend but not your spouse?

I’m kind of lacking in the best friend department right now. I have good friends but not one or two that I hang out with or confide in on a regular basis. Besides Evelyn, I guess my cousin would be my closest friend.

What do you wish you had left unsaid?

Oh so many things. Too many to list here. I tend to run without a filter on most days so I say quite a few questionable things.

What was the first thing you ate or drank today?

A banana followed by a cup of coffee.

Are you saving or spending?

About 10% saving and 90% spending. That’s going to reverse itself as the year progresses and we start to pay off more bills.

Whew! That took a while. Let’s see if I can keep up from here on out.

While writing this I was listening to " Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World" from "Facing Future" by "Israel Kamakawiwo'ole"

Somewhere over the rainbow
Way up high
And the dreams that you dreamed of
Once in a lullaby
Somewhere over the rainbow
Blue birds fly
And the dreams that you dreamed of
Dreams really do come true ooh oh
Someday I'll wish upon a star
Wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where trouble melts like lemon drops
High above the chimney tops
That's where you'll find me
Oh, somewhere over the rainbow bluebirds fly
And the dream that you dare to,
Oh why, oh why can't I?
Well I see trees of green and red roses too,
I'll watch them bloom for me and you
And I think to myself
What a wonderful world
Well I see skies of blue
And I see clouds of white
And the brightness of day
I like the dark
And I think to myself
What a wonderful world
The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces of people passing by
I see friends shaking hands
Saying, "How do you do?"
They're really saying, I...I love you
I hear babies cry and I watch them grow,
They'll learn much more than we'll know
And I think to myself
What a wonderful world world
Someday I'll wish upon a star,
Wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where trouble melts like lemon drops
High above the chimney top
That's where you'll find me
Oh, somewhere over the rainbow way up high
And the dream that you dare to, why, oh why can't I? I?

2014 In Review

This is that post I write every year to see how I did on last year’s resolutions and goals. It’s also the post I write every year that I realize that the year has flown by and I didn’t meet half my goals.

Last year I resolved to read more, write more and learn more.

I met my annual goal to read 50 books and I also read a lot more magazines and listened to more podcasts this past year than I have before.

I always want to write more but even though I actually doubled the amount of my blog post this year it just doesn’t feel like I accomplished this goal to its fullest.

As for learning…I didn’t take any official classes online or otherwise but most of my reading this year has been on being mindful, happy, healthy, and accountable. I feel I actually did learn something and have been able to apply that to my outlook on life.

In the past I have always gone into the myriad of ways that I failed and then beat myself up over it. But not this year.

I tried, I won some, I lost some, I came out at the end of the year happier and healthier so that’s a win in my book.

Happy New Year and may your 2015 be the beginning of the best times of your life.

While writing this I was listening to " Happiness" from "Timekeeper" by "Lucy Schwartz"

Happiness,
Happiness is here
Unexpected she whispers in your ear
Like a child,
Like a child,
You are new again
In the fields, fields you grew up knowing
In the fields, watch the flowers the flowers blowing
Like a child,
Like a child,
You are home again
And you're so beautiful
Tiny spark, held between your hands
What was lost, is lighted up again
Like a man,
Like a man,
You are hungry again
Tender heart, you have stopped your sighing
Tender heart, you have quit your lying
Like a woman,
Like a woman,
You are honest again
And you're so beautiful
You're so beautiful

The Three Rs

My mind started to wander when I began thinking about my New Year resolutions for 2014.

I began to think about the “Three Rs”, reading, writing, and arithmetic, and how I could utilize them in my resolutions.

Reading - I have this one pretty well covered. I’ll read anything.

Last year I read 59 books. I have a lot of books that have been stacked around the house for years so my goal is to work my way through them instead of checking out more from the library.

Writing – Every year I say the same thing, “I’m going to post here more often.” This year I really am. Really. I’m not just saying that, I am.

Arithmetic – ?? I’m not really planning on doing much extra with math this year so I’m going to equate this with learning.

Maybe a new craft or hobby? Maybe an online course or photography workshop?

Maybe to think before I speak? That’s a good one.

Of course the way my mind works I couldn’t stop with just 3 Rs.

How about:

Rest, Relax, Recreation, photogRaphy, Reconnect, Reflect, tRavel, Recommit, chaRity, Reenergize, Renovate, butteRfly …

Happy New Year!

May this year bring you only peace, happiness and joy.

City of the Dead (Horrors of History) by T. Neill Anderson

A LibraryThing Review

95149

T. Neill Anderson uses a blend of fictional characters mixed with historical figures and events to weave a very gripping tale of the Galveston Hurricane of 1900.

He immediately jumps into a graphic description of the storm and its destructive power letting the reader sense the fear, desperation and horror that the characters are experiencing as they fight for their lives against nature’s worst.

Although classified as YA Fiction, it is written in a fashion that is still enjoyable to an older reader.

Today’s Public Service Announcement

Honestly, you do not need to check out 100 books from the library for your 2 year old.

Check a couple of your favorites to read to them.

Resolution “Do Over”

If you read my last 2 posts (Ode to 2012 and Moving on to 2013) you might have noticed a little bitterness towards how last year turned out.
It was a very difficult year financially and I was very disappointed that I could not purchase Christmas gifts for my family or an anniversary gift for my wife.
Therefore, I was a little angry when I wrote those posts.
The next day a good friend of mine chastised and challenged me to write about things I did do. Thanks Shannon.
So I have rehashed last year in my mind and there are some highlights.
I did celebrate my 30th wedding anniversary in December and even though I couldn’t afford a gift, Evelyn and I had a lovely night out for dinner, dessert, coffee, card games and a great heart-to-heart about the past year and how we plan to do things differently in 2013.
Our relationship is the center of my universe and everything out there spinning around us is nothing more than space junk. I am very thankful we are as solid as ever.
I also obtained my CompTIA A+ certification.
Both Evelyn and I are still employed.
In spite of last year’s illnesses, we are still in good health.
Although last year wasn’t a year of travel, we did spend a very enjoyable weekend trip to the Aquarium in Denver, and an evening in Black Hawk. Counting the free room, free drinks, free breakfast, and Evelyn’s winnings, we actually came out about $1100 ahead.
A year or so ago during a Las Vegas trip gone bad (I was a complete ass and couldn’t stop myself) I realized I had an underlying layer of anger that could pop up its ugly head at anytime and I could do little to control it. Nothing violent, just rude and obnoxious. So I have spent the last year on a journey seeking help, both professional and self-help via books, etc., and have made great strides in recognizing when the feeling of anger is coming and being able to control it.
What?!?!  Why would you put a statement out there like that? Aren’t you worried about what people will think?
Of course, I worry about that but this blog has always been about baring my soul so I can leave things behind and learn from them.
Sooo, all this brings me to not only my resolution “do over” but also the Thanksgiving thanks I never shared.
First the Thanks:
  • I am most thankful for Evelyn, my wife, who no matter how crazy I sound is always right there being supportive and willing to help me through anything.
  • I’m thankful for my family who even though I’m horrible at picking up a phone and staying in touch are always there for me as well.
  • I’m thankful for my friends who are always there waiting to support me and to give me that proverbial kick in the ass when I need it.
Now for next year’s resolutions goals:
  • Continue to treat Evelyn like the goddess she is.
  • Be grateful for what I have and stop fretting about what I don’t.
  • Obtain my CompTIA Network+ certification.
  • Read 50 books.
  • Change my current situation whether it be a new position at work or a new job somewhere else.
  • Stop over-analyzing my choices and just make one, good or bad.
  • Continue my journey toward conquering anger.
  • Take a road trip with one or both of my brothers. (I guess I’ll need to call them to plan this)
  • Reconnect with family and friends.
  • More photography trips.
  • Lighten up.
And of course,
BE POSITIVE – BE HEALTHY – BE ACTIVE

Happy New Year and thanks for being there for me.
